Bill Spencer, Jr. (born William Spencer, Jr.) is a fictional character from the American soap opera The Bold and the Beautiful, portrayed by actor Don Diamont. Bradley Bell hired Diamont soon after The Young and the Restless fired him. Bell created the role of Bill Jr. specifically for the actor and established him as the son of publishing tycoon Bill Spencer, Sr. (Jim Storm) and the brother of Karen Spencer and the late Caroline Forrester (both played by Joanna Johnson). The character first began airing in the series on May 12, 2009. He is currently the main antagonist of the series.

Background

After Don Diamont was fired from The Young and the Restless, The Bold and the Beautiful's executive producer and headwriter Bradley Bell hired Diamont to play Bill Spencer, Jr., a character Bell created specifically for the actor.[2] "It's funny how one door closes and another opens," Diamont said. "I had a lot of emotion tied to Y&R. My entire adult life had been there, including so many relationships. Little did I know that such a great character and work situation was literally around the corner."[1] Though the character had never been mentioned before in the series, he is the son of a character from The Bold and the Beautiful's early years, Bill Spencer, Sr., who ran Spencer Publications. With the departure of Bill Sr. from the series in 1994, that business was no longer featured in the show's storylines. The addition of Bill Jr. would resurrect the business and affect other characters, as well. Previously, the show's major business's were fashion houses like Forrester Creations and Jackie M. "We're bringing another powerful presence to the show by getting Spencer Publications going again," Bell said. "We're going to show how fashion magazines influence the fashion world."[3]

Diamont described the new character he would portray as "uncensored" and "devilish".[2] "Bill is a publishing bigwig, so he's very powerful, but he didn't grow up with a silver spoon," he said. "In fact, he was estranged from his father for a long time, but some years back, they developed a relationship. It wasn't exactly a cuddly one, but it was still a relationship, and they bonded over business."[2] He was a contrast to Brad Carlton, the character he used to play on The Young and the Restless. "It's not like they're taking a facsimile of Brad and plugging him into this show," Diamont said. "This guy could not be a bigger departure from Brad. Bill dresses and thinks completely different. He's ruthless and twisted."[2] Bill is a "Richard Branson-esque businessman"[1] who would speak his mind no matter the consequence.[1]

Storyline

After his father, Bill Spencer, Sr., dies, Bill, Jr. receives 50 percent ownership of Spencer Publications and is named co-CEO with his sister Karen. He makes a deal with his father's close friend Stephanie Forrester to promote Jackie M Designs using a daily blog entitled The Logan Chronicles. It makes Spencer Communications a lot of money and gives Stephanie her revenge on Eric and Donna. In response to the blog, Donna barges into Bill's office, demanding that he pull The Logan Chronicles immediately. Bill, Jr. is impressed with Donna's passion and implies that he would turn the tables on Stephanie if he got the right "motivation" from Donna.

Bill begins dating Katie Logan but her sisters assume Bill is just using her. He fails to acquire Forrester Creations by blackmailing Eric Forrester after uncovering Eric's scheme of using identity theft to help illegal immigrants. Before the fashion show between Jackie M Designs and Forrester Creations Bill bribes the three judges but decides to let the fashion show be fair after Katie uncovers his plan. Bill tells Katie that he is impressed by her because no one has ever seen him the way she does and that his father would not be happy with him for letting a deal fail due to a woman. Donna tries to tempt Bill to see if he is true about his feelings for Katie, however, he resists her temptations. With Forrester winning the fashion show they receive more loans from the bank but when a payment is delivered late, Bill pressures the banker to foreclose on the Forrester's loan and sell Forrester Creations to him. Bill convinces Katie that he is doing the best for the company by paying off its debt and tells her that she will be CEO of Forrester Creations.

Katie discovers a DVD that Bill Spencer, Sr. made instructing his son to use Spencer Publications to take Forrester Creations away from Eric Forrester because of Eric's affairs with Brooke and Donna as well as for firing of Stephanie.
