Patricia Ann "Patty" Williams (formerly Abbott) is a fictional character in the American soap opera The Young and the Restless, portrayed by originating actress Tammy Taylor briefly in 1980 before Lilibet Stern took over the role from 1980 to 1983[1] and by Andrea Evans from 1983 to 1984.[2] The character returned on February 10, 2009,[3] portrayed by Stacy Haiduk, operating under the alias Mary Jane Benson.[4]

Storylines

In the early 1980s, Patty falls in love with Jabot heir Jack Abbott (then played by Terry Lester),[5] much to her parents' disapproval.[6][7] A jealous Jill Foster (then played by Deborah Adair) then confesses to Patty that she and Jack have been secret lovers. A furious Jack fires Jill from Jabot. Patty then accepts a date from Danny Romalotti (Michael Damian).

Patty eventually leaves Danny and becomes involved with Jack. Patty's father, Carl (Brett Hadley), tries to break up the union, and Jack retaliates by marrying Patty in June 1982.[5][6] Patty soon becomes suspicious that Jack is only interested in her for sex. Jack, meanwhile, begins seeing Diane Jenkins (Alex Donnelley) behind Patty's back. When Patty catches Jack and Diane together in his office, she is so traumatized that she trips over a plant in the lobby and miscarries.[5][6] When Patty recovers, she tells Jack she wants another child.[6] Later she overhears Jack telling Jill (then Deborah Adair) of his plans to have a vasectomy, and that he only married Patty so that his father John (Jerry Douglas) would make him president of Jabot. This sends Patty over the edge and she arrives at Jack's office with a loaded gun to kill herself in front of Jack.[6] Jack admits to Patty that he has been cruel to her, and begs her not to shoot herself, but to shoot him. Patty shoots Jack three times.[5][6]

Patty temporarily loses all memory of the shooting.[5] Jack survives and is paralyzed in a hospital bed for some time.[6] Patty's father Carl is the police detective in charge of finding Jack's attacker and becomes convinced Jill has done it. Only Jack knows that Patty shot him. After the truth comes out, Jack refuses to press charges and attempts to reconcile with her.[6] Patty decides to divorce him.[5][6]. She then becomes involved again with Danny. However, Danny soon marries a pregnant Traci Abbott, even though he's not the father, to give the child a name. Traci tells Patty that the marriage is only temporary until the baby is born and they will get a divorce. As the pregnancy progresses, Traci begins to fall in love with Danny and when Patty confronts her, she accidentally causes Traci to fall down the stairs and miscarry. Seeing no future with Danny, who blames her, Patty leaves town.

Patty returns to town in 2009, operating under the alias Mary Jane Benson, with help from Victor Newman (Eric Braeden); the name Mary Jane comes from her mother Mary and aunt Jane. Mary Jane underwent plastic surgery, paid for by Victor, (making her look like her psychiatrist, Dr. Emily Peterson), in order to infiltrate Jabot and get close to Jack (now played by Peter Bergman). She manages to seduce him after he separates from his ex-wife, Sharon Newman (Sharon Case), and they form a no-strings-attached sexual relationship. When Jack briefly reunites with Sharon, she verbally lashes out at her in public but manages to fake indifference about the new development in front of Jack. Victor ends his plans with her, making himself her enemy. Paul Williams (Doug Davidson), Patty's brother, becomes suspicious of Mary Jane, believing they have met before. He begins looking into her past and finds out that all of her information was created a few months prior.

After losing Sharon again, Jack has sex with Phyllis Summers Newman (Michelle Stafford), which Mary Jane witnesses. In an attempt to keep Phyllis away from Jack. Mary Jane consumes peanut butter cookies and gives Phyllis's daughter a kiss. The idea was that Summer would have an allergic reaction which would have been enough to keep Phyllis focused on her daughter and not on Jack. The plan took a devastating turn as Summer falls deeply ill. At the hospital Mary Jane witnesses Phyllis and Jack getting closer. Furious that her plan didn't work she goes to Heather, the attorney and confesses that she believes that Phyllis intentionally poisoned Summer as an attempt to save her failing marriage with Nick. As Phyllis and others put the pieces together it becomes clear that Mary Jane was the one that made the accusation against Phyllis. The new revelation causes Mary Jane to go into hiding. While hiding she commits a string of criminal activities such as killing Victor Newman's dog, stealing Mac's money, stalking Sharon by sending her a baby doll with the eyes cut out, and drugging Jack. She gets Jack into bed with her by pretending to be Sharon. It is revealed later Mary Jane's goal was to get pregnant as evident by her purchasing a pregnancy kit.

In August of 2009 Patty unknowingly confessed to her brother Todd, a priest, in a church. He figured out it was Patty and told Paul. When Mary Jane was caught by Paul she admitted her true identity to him.

Patty told Jack that she's carrying their child, but because she suffered a miscarriage years ago, it is very unlikely that she is really pregnant.

It was learned recently that Patty's dramatic plastic surgery was a result of trying to look like her psychiatrist, Dr. Emily Peterson. In Sept. 2009, Patty shoots Victor and calls him a Son of a Bitch for using her
